Eel lives both in fresh water and in sea. It appeared on the earth more than 100 million years ago. It used to live in Indonesia. But then it moved to the area of Japanese archipelago (in Hamanaka lake in Shizuoka prefecture). This is a very hardy essence and able to live without water at small amount of moisture fish. 18 types of eel are totaled in the world nowadays. Anguilla japonica is the main version, lived in Japan.

Eel contains vitamin E. That's why Japanese people like to eat shish-kebab made of eel (unagi-no kabayaki). Unagi-no kimo (soup) is made of eel's liver. As the dishes made of eel are considered as the expensive ones, they are usually served for guests.

Unfortunately, it is quite impossible to try natural eel nowadays. People usually cook dishes with eel, which has grown up in artificial reservoirs.
