Sakurambo
Sakurambo

Sakurambo came to Japan in the beginning of XIX century (the Meiji epoch) from America. But after many years of selection works, Japanese sorts of cherry were formed.

80% of sakurambo is cultivated in Yamagata prefecture. Satonishiki is the tastiest sort of sakurambo. This cherry is also cultivated in Hokkaido, Yamanashi, Akita, Aomori and Fukushima prefectures.

Sakurambo contains many healthy substances: glucose, fruit acids, carotene etc. It is considered that sakurambo possesses diuretic action.

In Japan there are many sorts of sakurambo. But there are thee main ones:

  • Takasago - the earliest grade. Very sweet.
  • Satonishiki - the most popular sort in Japan. Steady against bad weather conditions.
  • Nanie - in 1957 the European sort "Napoleon" has been crossed with satonishiki. The hybrid has turned out to be very large. The weight of berries is 9-11 grams. The sweet taste of satonishiki has kept. The color is much lighter but the stability is much worse. It often decays during season of rains.
