In Japan tangerines are cultivated in the whole territory, situated southern Tokyo. The history of tangerine in Japan is very ancient. Many sorts of tangerines are cultivated in Japan. The most famous one is "on shumikan". It is cultivated in Wakayama prefecture. It is very soft. It has fresh taste and pleasant smell.

There is one legend in Japan. In the XVII century one man used to deliver tangerines to Edo (Tokyo). Thanks to tangerines he earned one million gold coins. Some famous sorts of tangerines (ponkam, for example) came from India through China and Taiwan. The sort called amanatsu, which is cultivated in Wakayama prefecture, is famous for its size and thick peel.

Hassaku is the most popular sort. It has bright orange color, brilliant smooth peel and pleasant smell.
Decopon is the hybrid of tangerine and orange. It has quite freakish shape.
