Dengaku

Tofu-dengaku is a dish made of tofu. But instead of tofu people have begun to use taro, daikon and konnyaku. In the end of the Edo period (1868 year) dengaku has appeared on the simple people's tables. In Kyoto in the Gion area there were two teahouses, famous with their dengaku. In the very beginning of the Edo period these two houses, standing in front to each other on the eastern and western part, were famous with their gion-dofu. The teahouse, situated on the eastern side, still exists. It's called Nakamura-ro now. In Edo there also was one more teahouse, where they served dengaku. It was situated on the territory of the temple called Inori in Masaki. Dengaku was the most favorite dish of simple people. It has started to extend from the Ovari and Mikava areas.
