Kombu is got on the open areas of the North sea at a depth of 5-7 meters. The hooking is concentrated around Hokkaido. Kombu is good for health. It contains natural fibers, which cuts high pressure, and iodine, which is essential when arteries stoppage.

The word "kombu" meant a wide cloth, that's why plants with wide shape were considered as happy products. During samurais times, when a samurai broke on a battle, he used kombu as a decoration for all ceremonies. This product gained popularity among people as well. It was used as a decoration on the New Year's Eve or as a present from the groom's family to the bride's family. One of kombu types is tororokombu, used for preparing onigiri and Japanese soup.
