Haori

Montsuki haori

Haori is cloak that Japanese put on over kimono. The most usual and widespread is called chyubaori. Saying "haori" Japanese have in mind very this cloak. Montsuki haori is a cloak with family arms; it is part of full dress and put on for ceremonies. Nagahaori is much longer then chyubaori. Haori that is shorter then chyubaori is called cyabaori that means "tea haori". In spite of name this haori is not designed for tea-ceremonies visiting and is ordinary home cloak. For tea-ceremony it's in order to put on jittoku. At summer they put on gauzy nazubaori.

Montsuki haori
This cloak ought to have five family arms on bosom, sleeves and back. It is put on for the most solemn ceremonies. In some cases it is allowed to have three or even one family arms on montsuki haori. The majority of Japanese put on montsuki haori just for their wedding ceremony.

On photo you can see common length of chyubaori. But the length and shape of this haori are able to change. There are even sleeveless haori (sosenashi haory). The length of chyubaori varies depends of fashion trends and also region. For instance chyubaoris in Kanto are shorter then ones in Kansai.

Cyabaori
Cyabaori differs from ordinary haori by its shorter length. It is put on at home. On photo you can see chyabaori which is usually offered to guests in Japanese hotels. Usually chyabaoris are sewed from thick wool because chyabaori is warm dress. Tapes are made from the same fabric.

Gakuura
Gakuura is a colored lining of man's haori which is made from pure silk. On photo you can see gakuura with ordinary landscape. Sometimes one can meet real masterpieces painted in ukiyoe genre. Widespread topic for lining is ship with Gods.

Jittoku
Jittoku differs by straight shape and wide sleeves and tapes are sewed directly to cloak. From Kamakura period (1192-1333) jittoku played a broad spectrum of roles. Now one can see it just on monks and tea-ceremony teachers.
