Hibachi

Hibati
Hibachi

Hibachi is a brazier, a portable oven which Japanese long since use for heating premises. Unfortunately it is leaving a daily life. Hibachi has appeared during Nara Period (710-778) and has long and interesting history. Since Edo period (1600-1867) and till the beginning of war on Pacific Ocean hibachi was very popular as multipurpose furniture. During this period a lot of braziers were created from different materials: various wood breeds, brass, and ceramics.

There necessarily should be accompanying subjects near to hibachi - nippers for coals, trivet and an iron kettle for water. The metal lattice can be useful to roast rice cakes. For smokers there is a special tray with smoking accessories. Therefore hibachi is not just beautiful part of interior. It allows to warm up food and to prepare all for tea ceremony.

Hibachi has a big advantage before the fireplace. Charcoal which is used at hibachi does not smoke. Therefore it is possible to put hibachi even in the cleanest room. Besides charcoal has effect of long infra-red beams, even its weakest fire gives sensation of heat. Charcoal has also some more advantages: stability of fire, ease of temperature regulation, long duration of burning. These qualities are the result of labour-intensive process of the roasting which carbonizes a tree of the highest quality.

In modern houses hibachi is seldom used directly, more often as a support for flowers. Large braziers transform into original small tables with bonsai in the deepening and glass cover. The Japanese also use in decorative purposes other antique household goods: kago (wooden or bamboo sieve for rice), byobu (screen), tansu (locker).
