Kakejiku

Kakejiku
Kakejiku

There is a room for tea ceremony - chashitsu - in the traditional Japanese house. The main place in this room is the wall niche with the raised floor - takonoma. And the most important thing in takonoma is kakejiku.

Kakejiku is a scroll painting with ink-and-brush pictures or calligraphical inscription. "Kakejiku" is modern name of such rolls, originally they were called kakemono.

The choice of the kakejiku and its complementary flower arrangement help set the spiritual mood of the tea ceremony itself, it perfect harmony with the time of year.

Rules of hanging the kakejiku
1. First of all wash your hands. Don't worry because nervousness is conductive to sweat. Taking cover away be careful not to hurt kakejiku's edges. While extracting kakejiku strongly hold its roller and not touch the kakejiku.
2. Lay the scroll on your knees, untie the lace and take japanese paper away. If there is a bookmark in kakejiku take it and place back to the box.
3. Stand up evenly and keeping kakejiku's centre of gravity by left hand, hang its tab on hook. Use special stick for hanging of pictures. After that slowly unroll kakejiku keeping it up by both hands.
4. Be careful not to let the unrolled kakejiku fall down.

Rules of removing the kakejiku
1. If there is a vase or decorative dish under the kakejiku, transport it to safe place.

6. Put up the edge of right tape to the left.

Rules of tying the kakejiku
1. Rolling kakejiku up catch also its tapes and edge of wrapper.
2. Wrap kakejiku around with paper belt once.
3. Holding kakejiku with left hand pass the tying lace through the center of tab. Wrap kakejiku around once with lace.
4. Then wrap scroll around with lace more to the right and more to the left of the center.
5. After kakejiku is wrapped three times, pass lace with is doubled over through the right side of tab. Then pass it through tab from its left side.
6. Pull the ends and level right and left sides.

Kakejiku's keeping
Before you take the scroll away, brush it off with special plume whisk. Be careful not to touch kakejiku with whisk. Dust must being removed by air movement during waving.
In the beginning of winter choose one or two sunny days with low humidity and dry scrolls up. Put scrolls into box in dry days. If you do it in wet day moisture gets to the box that can be reason of spots and mould.
The box for kakejiku must be done from paulownia which absorbs the moisture. Keep it in dry place.
If there is an insecticide in the box dry kakejiku more often. Concentration of its fumes could have bad effect to the paper. Periodically change insecticides. Wrap them into japanese paper and put in box aside of kakejiku. Don't let insecticides be contiguous to scroll.
Dry the scroll once a year or more often.

Drying the scroll:
- Don't dry under direct sunbeams.
- Choose the place which is free from direct conditioned blast.
- Also dry the box.
- Choose the day with low humidity using hygrometer.
- Scrolls are sensible to abrupt humidity drop. So during drying try to avoid draughts.

Some problems that could appear with kakejiku
1. Kakejiku is unrolling hardly. Possible reason: it was rolled too tightly.
2. Nicotine traces are appeared. Possible reason: scroll is hanging about the year without taking away.
3. Pleats arise. Possible reason: scroll was hanging awry or was rolled incorrectly.

If you notice that tab of scroll is in need of repair or substitute, do it as soon as possible because the scroll could fall down.
